Open Access Simple Theory of Acoustic Emission - A Consideration of Measurement Parameters

Download Article:
Acoustic emission can, potentially, yield details of defect motion within materials. The problem is proving difficult because of the complexities associated with the generation, propagation and detection of acoustic emission.

Here relationships are suggested between the acoustic emission stress wave and measurement parameters such as count, burst amplitude and energy which may aid interpretation of acoustic emission measurement. Burst amplitude seems to be most simply related to the stress wave parameters but other parameters may be suitable depending on the experimental conditions prevailing.
