Correlation Between Place of Delivery, Husband’s Support and Exclusive Breastfeeding Practice in Sungai Ulin, Banjarbaru City, Indonesia

Background: Exclusive breastfeeding is the most important nutrition for babies until 6 months without any additional food or drinks. Based on Indonesia’ Basic Health Survey 2013, the implementation of exclusive breastfeeding was only 38% nationally, while the government target for 80% in 2010. The condition at public health center of Sungai Ulin in August 2015 was only 13.46%. This study aimed to determine the correlation between place of delivery, husband’s support and exclusive breastfeeding practice in Sungai Ulin Public Health Center, Banjarbaru, Indonesia. Method: This study used a case-control study design. The subjects were 69 mothers who have baby aged 6–12 months: 23 mothers as cases (non-exclusive breastfeeding) and 46 mothers as controls (exclusive breastfeeding). Subjects were chosen using simple random sampling technique. Data were analyzed by chi-square tests at 95%. Results: The results showed that there was a correlation between husband’s support (p-value = 0.007, OR = 6.750) and exclusive breastfeeding practice, but no correlation between place of delivery (p-value = 1.000) and exclusive breastfeeding practice. Conclusion: Husband’s support correlated to exclusive breastfeeding practice, but not place of delivery.
