This paper presents the design and performance evaluation of Internet of things (IoT) network that uses a virtual access points (AP). Currently, wireless local area network (WLAN) technology has gained widespread use and provides high data rate access to the Internet to devices in proximity of an AP. This type of connectivity has many advantages, including simplicity, flexibility, and cost effectiveness. We introduce the concept of a virtual AP to an IoT network. The proposed system can guarantee real-time transfer of a large amount of frequently generated, small data packets within the IoT network by separating the data network and the IoT network through the use of a virtual AP. This approach provides a cost-effective way to configure a system as an IoT network because a virtual AP can be simply added to a common WLAN AP.
