Antioxidant Enzyme Activities in Exopalaemon carinicauda, Holthuis, 1950, (Decapoda: Palaemonidae) in Response to Naphthalene
There were few reports on the antioxidant response of aquatic organisms exposed to naphthalene. This research explored the cephalothoraxic antioxidant responses of shrimp to naphthalene exposure for the first time. The seawater ridgetail white shrimp Exopalaemon carinicauda was
chosen as experimental animal. The shrimps were exposed to six different concentrations Groups of naphthalene (160–318 μg/l) for 4 days and then cephalothoraxic tissues were separated for determination. As shown from the results, 4 days afterwards, the activities of antioxidant
enzymes (CAT, SOD, GPx and GST) were induced on the whole compared to control group; CAT responded to naphthalene exposure significantly in Group 3 (p < 0.05) and 4 (p < 0.01) and reached the maximum in Group 4 with an activation rate up to 38.4%. SOD was also induced significantly
by naphthalene in Groups 2, 3 and 4 (p < 0.05) and highly significantly in Group 5 (p < 0.01) with an induction rate 23.5%. The activity of GPx was not greater in exposed shrimp and the response declared similar between Groups 3, 4 and 6, 7, but the activity was significantly
affected only in Group 5 (p < 0.05), with an activation rate at 35.6%. Similarly, GST activity was induced highly significantly (p < 0.01) only in Group 4 with an activation rate up to 42.2%. Thus, all the above antioxidant defense enzymes are inducible enzymes; however
at higher exposure concentration of naphthalene a severe oxidative stress restrained the activities of these enzymes because of oxidative damage and a loss in compensatory mechanisms.
