Two techniques have been used in the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) to test the quality of violins and violas. On the one hand resonance curves are obtained under electromagnetic forcing; on the other, the wave-form excited by bowing in the normal fashion is recorded on tape and its overtone structure then analysed.
