Innovations in mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) to identify the underlying mechanisms in biological systems
Mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) is a well-understood technique used in chemical mass spectrometry to visualise the spatial distribution of chemical compositions including biomarkers, metabolites, peptides and proteins, by their molecular mass. Although widely used traditional methodologies such as radiochemistry and immunohistochemistry achieve the same goal as MSI, they are limited in their abilities to analyse multiple samples at once, and can prove to be lacking if researchers do not have prior knowledge of the samples being studied. MSI offers a much-improved scope to examine the actual building blocks of many common chemical processes, and expand our knowledge of their operations, and why sometimes they fail. MALDI is an emerging technology based on the principles of MSI, yet MALDI imaging is becoming an even more powerful tool.
