Acidic and Basic Sites in Iron Modified Nano-TiO2 for Gas Sensors

It is reported a study on the modification produced by the addition of iron in TiO2 nanocrystals, modifying their surface characteristics. In the range of Fe from 0.16 at.% to 0.65 at.%, it is found that the density of available acidic or basic site to react with a determined target gas molecule with a predefined acid or basic molecule can be regulated according to the added concentration allowing the improvement of the sensor performance. Examples using ammonia and acetic acid, respectively, as basic and acid target molecules, are presented. Likewise, the sensor behavior against ethanol is discussed on the base of these surface characteristics.
