The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission’s Oceanside Facility currently produces Class B biosolids with four egg-shaped mesophilic anaerobic digesters. The digesters were rehabilitated to allow Oceanside to convert to thermophilic digestion, which will achieve Class A requirements by utilizing three thermophilic digesters operated as sequencing batch reactors followed by one flow-through mesophilic digester. The objectives of this research were to develop a full-scale startup plan, which included testing the feasibility of using the existing mesophilic digestate to generate a stable thermophilic population, developing an appropriate feed strategy during the conversion from flow-through to batch mode, and establishing new operator guidelines to maintain healthy digestion. The lab-scale investigation began in June 2014 and fullscale startup and operation began in January 2016.
