This paper presents evidence showing the gradual development of time consciousness and awareness of clock time in Wales, and the ordering of life and society by clock time before 1800. Much of its focus is on the period up to 1700, before any makers of domestic clocks were established in Wales. It shows that the historical Welsh evidence for clock time and clock-time practices is just as rich and extensive as that adduced by Glennie and Thrift for England. Though many kinds of sources are of course the same in both countries, the poetry evidence presented here is distinctively Welsh. In sum, the Welsh evidence is similar to and quite consistent with that for England insofar as public clocks are concerned, but the take-up of domestic clocks in Wales exhibits a definite time lag, being more or less comparable to or a little later than in the north and west of England and considerably later than in London and the south-east.
