Welsh Princes, English Wives: the Politics of Powys Wenwynwyn Revisited

The ancient mid Welsh kingdom of Powys and its chief divisions in the central medieval period are no longer viewed as unimportant, but as dominions with a political dynamic of their own. However, the whole story has not yet been told. As the thirteenth-century rulers of Powys increasingly looked eastward for their social and political contacts, they took wives from the neighbouring Marcher lordships. This article explores the contributions of two of those women, Margaret Corbet and Hawise Lestrange, to the affairs of southern Powys and reveals, for the first time, the key part that they played in ensuring its long-term survival.
