The deep-sea asellote isopod family Mesosignidae, found primarily in the tropical latitudes in the east Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, is revised and several hypotheses are postulated to explain the evolution of species within this family. The emergence of the Isthmus of Panama is discussed as a driving force for allopatric speciation. The following four new genera Bermudasignum, Costasignum, Japanosignum, and Kurilosignum are diagnosed, a new deep-sea species from Bermuda Pedestal, Bermudasignum frankenbergi n. gen., n. sp. is described and its origin is explained as the most recent evolutionary event in the recent history of the family Mesosignidae.
