Irregularities in the Test of Regular Sea Urchins
Test abnormalities are described in a number of regular urchins. These are mainly Lytechinus variegatus, but include also Tripneustes esculentus, Diadema antillarum, Eucidaris tribuloides and Echinometra lucunter. They include dimerous, trimerous, tetramerous and
hexamerous examples, as well as lesser ray abnormalities. Some were the result of mechanical injury, but the hypothesis is stressed that most are the result of metabolic upset.
