Free Content Determination of Calcium and Magnesium in Sea Water by (Ethylenedinitrilo) Tetraacetic Acid Titration

An analytical method with improved accuracy for determining magnesium and calcium in sea water using (ethylenedinitrilo) tetraacetic acid titration is described. The combined concentration of magnesium, calcium, and strontium is determined first; then the sum of calcium and strontium is measured in the presence of magnesium. Magnesium concentration is calculated from the difference of the two measurements; calcium content is obtained after correcting for strontium. The method is applicable to the analysis of marine sediments and ashes of biological materials.
