Generic Differences in Prodissoconchs of Gulf of Mexico Oysters
Prodissoconchs (larval shells) of Crassostrea virginica and Ostrea spp. are illustrated and described from pediveliger larvae and spat reared in the laboratory. Prodissoconchs of O. frons and O. equestris were indistinguishable from each other, but they differed
markedly from those of C. virginica. Definitive prodissoconchs of Ostrea possessed broad, blunt, orthogyrous beaks in contrast to the hooked, acute, opisthogyrous beaks of C. virginica.
Ostrea was a minor component (about 1 per cent) of the total spatfall in Santa Rosa Sound, Florida, in the summer of 1962.
