Free Content Contributions to the Biology of Tagelus Divisus (Tellinacea: Pelecypoda) in Biscayne Bay, Florida

The biology of Tagelus divisus (Spengler), one of the species of the infauna of Biscayne Bay, was studied over a period of 22 months. Shell growth was studied on individually marked specimens in the field. Monthly dry weights and examination of sexual development were made. Size frequencies were determined at intervals.

Tagelus divisus spawns in the winter from December through March. The smallest spat are found from late April through June. Growth is very fast in the first year and much slower in the second year. Those individuals larger than 2.0 cm show seasonal variation in growth. Most T. divisus mature at a size of 2.0 cm.
