Free Content Mineralogy of the Fine Fraction in Certain Carbonate Cores

The amount of aragonite, low- and high-Mg calcite and, where feasible, the percentage of MgCO3 in the high-Mg calcite were determined by X-ray diffraction in samples from 7 short cores collected in the vicinity of the Florida Keys and one core from the Florida Straits. Only the <62, <31 and <4 micron size fractions were examined on the assumption that any post depositional changes would be most obvious in the finer size fractions. Diagenetic changes with core depth appear to be largely obscured by original differences in mineralogy. If changes have occurred, they are subtle in nature.

In terms of total amounts of unstable minerals (aragonite plus high-Mg calcite) the <4 micron size fraction is usually more unstable than the <62 micron size fraction. The mineralogical differences between size fractions are attributed mainly to differences in original mineralogy. Selective mineralogical changes due to solution or recrystallization in the various size fractions, either on the sea floor or with core depth play a secondary role at the most.
