Free Content A Wood Incubation Method for the Study of Lignicolous Marine Fungi

Download Article:
Test panels of wood, submerged in various marine localities, often show little or no visible lignicolous fungal development during the initial laboratory examination. Through a process of controlled incubation of the fungal infested wood, using sterilized glass chambers, the incipient fungal infestation develops the characteristic morphological features of the various marine ascomycetous and deuteromycetous species present. Thus, the time of the attack upon the submerged wood can be determined more readily. For, while the environmental conditions or the stage of physiological development of the organism may not have been favorable for the maturation of the diagnostic reproductive structures, such fructifications develop vigorously under the incubation conditions.
