The abstracts which follow present in synoptic form the arguments and findings of articles published in a number of other journals. They have been chosen for their potential interest to the readership of Policy & Politics. It is hoped that they will provide a more convenient and accessible reference source for academics and practitioners in the field than is at present available from existing, more widely ranging abstracting services. It is intended to keep the Policy & Politics abstracts as up-to-date as possible, and to widen constantly the range of journals from which they are taken. The Abstracts Editor would be pleased to receive abstracts written by authors of articles placed for publication elsewhere, to be reproduced by permission of the articles' publishers. Abstracts in this issue are classified by policy process and substantive areas. The former are grouped as follows: ideology and values, policy studies, policy making and implementation, state theory, participation, organisation studies, and evaluation and performance measurement. Substantive abstracts are classified by: health, housing, labour markets, poverty and social exclusion, social services and social care, and urban studies.
