Anchor Chain Trenching – Numerical Simulation of Progressive Erosion
Catenary and semi-taut mooring systems with suction piles and anchor chain embedded in the soil have been used for many floating structures, such as FPSOs and single-point moorings. The chain-anchor padeye may be several metres below seabed level. Surveys have highlighted the presence
of open trenches in front of some installed anchors. Cyclic chain movement associated with environmental loading and buoyancy changes of the FPSO are believed to be the main cause of these trenches. This phenomenon is an industry wide issue.
