Re-Evaluation of Pile Driveability in Chalk
Installation of piles in chalk by pile driving is a challenge to many offshore wind projects in Northern Europe as experience is rather limited and driving resistance may vary significantly. Depending on the density and grade of the chalk pile installations with negligible resistance
have been reported as well as pile driving refusals. Literature provides very little guidance on how to estimate soil resistance to driving in chalk. This paper presents the back analyses of pile driving records in different types of chalk and outlines an approach to calculate the chalk’s
resistance to driving based on empirical data and chalk classification. The back analyses show a reasonable agreement with the measured blow counts and provide an overview on the sensitivity of the analyses to certain input parameters. The methodology outlined in this paper aims to provide
a more reasonable prediction of pile driveability in chalk for future offshore projects as well as increased confidence in the predictions.
