Who Is Your Professional “Avatar”?
I write this editorial having just heard a talk by futurist Eric Meade who spoke about health care in 2025. As I listened to his thoughts about each of us having a personal health care avatar that is our entry point into the health care system, I was challenged to think about the equivalent in our professional lives. The avatar that Meade proposed is an electronic persona that monitors our health, transmits information to providers, guides our health care decisions, and provides up-to-date evidence that we can use to take charge of our own well-being. I have said for a long time that what I needed was a housewife—someone who would take charge of meal planning, grocery shopping, and generally keeping all six of us here on track. So if only my avatar could tell me when the furnace is due to be cleaned. . .
