Mastering Basic Computer Competencies One Byte at a Time
THIS IS THE SECOND IN A series of columns exploring health information technology (HIT) in the NICU. The first column focused on the national initiatives driving the adoption of information technology throughout the health care delivery system, and the requisite informatics competencies for nurses in practice to fully engage in the digital era of health care. Health care professionals increasingly rely on information sytems to assist them in providing quality care. A large percentage of any health care provider's practice involves the management of information. Computers are often required to perform information-related functions. Nurses in the NICU need to be equipped to integrate technology seamlessly within their daily workflow, and incorporate better tools to work safer, more efficiently, and communicate more effectively with families and other health care providers.
