September October 2010 News of the Academy
The Academy of Neonatal Nursing has selected Rodney Koehler, RN, from the McKay Dee Hospital in Ogden, Utah, to receive the prestigious 2010 Excellence in Neonatal Nursing Practice Award. Colleague, Vickie L. Baer, RN, honored "Rod" by nominating him for his outstanding neonatal nursing practice and contributions spanning over 30 years. "I cannot think of a person more deserving of the Excellence Award. Rod has given his all to become one of the most knowledgeable and dedicated neonatal nurses I have ever had the pleasure to work with. He has advanced as the art of neonatal nursing has advanced, moving forward with technological and best practice changes. Through all of the technological advances, he always stresses the importance of being skilled enough that if the equipment fails you still have the knowledge to do the job. He is a strong example of what nursing is and should be." In addition to his staff nursing practice, Rod continues to be the Neonatal Resuscitation Program Instructor and NICU Staff Advance Care Course Instructor, positions he has held since 1988 and 1980. "Dedicated", "supportive", "engaged", "compassionate", "a quick wit", and "physically fit!" These are the words used to describe Rod by colleagues and parents.
