Angry Families in the NICU
MRS. A. IS HOLDING HER PRETERM infant in kangaroo care when he begins to desaturate. The infant does not respond to an increase in oxygen administration or to repositioning and continues to desaturate. The nurse tells the mother that she must return the infant to his bed for further assessment. Mrs. A. relinquishes her son to the nurse but becomes upset. Raising her voice, she shouts that she is tired of being inconsequential to her son's care. The nurse has been hovering over her, she yells, and she is tired of being helpless and insignificant. She storms from the room.
