Developing Leadership Skills in Staff Nurses
Jessica was two weeks old and weighed almost 1,500 gm. Michelle, her nurse, had practiced in the NICU for one year and was struggling to gain self-confidence in this new setting. She was easily disorganized and was unable to prioritize complex patient issues. As I walked through the unit one day, I noticed how flustered Michelle appeared as a crowd of nurses stood at the baby's bedside. It was immediately apparent to me that she needed guidance and support to care for this patient. I understood the difficulty this peer was experiencing in her struggle to gain self-confidence, and my goal was to provide clinical leadership without taking over the situation.
