Latina/o children and adolescents in rural, emerging Latino communities are at an increased risk for experiencing mental and physical health disparities. Based on this background, a survey was administered to school counselors and school nurses working with Latina/o students in schools located in rural, emerging Latino communities. Overall, respondents reported higher frequency of basic physical (dental and vision concerns) and mental (adjustment issues and poor interpersonal skills) health disparities rather than more serious disparities (e.g., diabetes, depression). In addition, there were positive correlations between several health disparities and barriers to adequate health care. This article describes the types of health disparities observed in Latina/o students living in these communities as well as ideas for intervening in these situations.
