The purpose of this study was to elicit recommendations for health policies for childhood diabesity prevention in the Dominican Republic. Qualitative data was collected through focus groups with 35 health care workers from a tertiary level hospital in Santo Domingo. Data was analyzed using the qualitative software NVivo. Policies were proposed by participants for (a) hospital and health care systems, (b) schools and communities, and (c) advertising/marketing. Focus groups with medical and nursing personnel, and other health care workers in the Dominican Republic identified the need to look at childhood overweight, and its association with diabetes, as urgent public health problems. Nurses should be essential agents in policy making for childhood diabesity. The preventive and health promotion roles of nurses are emphasized by the results of this study.
