We undertook a systematic review of targeted literature to investigate whether appropriate translation methodologies were reported for published studies that have enrolled Hispanic participants who are Spanish speaking. Our review included studies that utilized questionnaires, surveys, or standardized interviews. We assessed whether these studies employed appropriate translation methodologies. Results revealed serious quality gaps. For instance, in our sample, only 7% of interview-based and 6% of survey-based studies in our review adhered to the double translation process. Of the research team members involved in the interview or survey administration process, only 18% in the former case and 0% in the case of surveys were reported as bilingual, bicultural, and trained/certified, while 7% of individuals involved in translating interview instruments from English into Spanish met this combination of ideal criteria.
