A program targeting Hispanic women in rural, medically underserved, southeastern Indiana was created in order to increase the knowledge and practice of breast cancer screenings. Known barriers of cost, social isolation, differences in language and culture, fear of health care providers, and limited access to health care were considered in designing the program. Breast education and mammograms were provided at no cost to 10 Hispanic women with incomes under $15,000, communication and partnerships were established with this community, and breast cancer educational materials written in Spanish became available in southeastern Indiana. Lessons learned included the need to carry out a more thorough cultural assessment and to address population-related barriers of the inability to read and need for child care.
