Global Perspective on Protective Clothing for Pesticide Operators
Promotion of safe and judicious use of pesticides (also known as plant protection products) is essential to safeguard the health and safety of individuals responsible for pesticide application. The use of engineering controls, appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), and good occupational hygiene assist in reducing hazards associated with pesticide handling. Individuals typically wear PPE because it is required by the pesticide label, it is mandatory, or they understand its importance. Often laws and regulations mandate the use of PPE to foster compliance; particularly when potential risks are not easily recognised. A systematic risk-based approach to develop and implement the mandates is recommended to ensure health and safety of pesticide operators (including handlers and applicators). The risk-based approach considers the operator exposure and the hazard of the pesticide. Conceptually, PPE needs for similar risks would be the same regardless of geographic location. Therefore, a global harmonised approach to standards development is being proposed as a way to implement regulations and train individuals to use PPE based on potential risk for pesticide operators.
