Health Policy Considerations in Texas Measles Outbreaks Past and Present
Objective: In this study, we analyzed the effects of vaccination policy on measles cases in Texas. Methods: We examined secondary data extracted from the Texas State Department of Health Services and previous literature analyses pertaining to Texas measles outbreaks. Results:
There is evidence of increasing vaccine exemption rates and increasing measles cases in the same counties in Texas during the last 3 outbreaks in Texas. Conclusion: Legislation and parental education on vaccines is an effective tool to raise vaccination rates; more research is necessary
to identify geographic clusters with higher exemption rates to target and tailor parental educational efforts for vaccination rate improvement.
