Choosing a Dissertation Topic: Additional Pointers
Several factors influence the selection of a dissertation topic, including the student's familiarity with, and interest in a problem, the faculty's availability and preferences, and practical considerations such as timeline and funding (Isaac et al., 1989, Lei, 2009, Useem, 1997). This
article identifies the popular dissertation topics and trends in the Social Sciences since 2000. We argue that students should be encouraged to choose original rather than trendy subjects for their dissertations. We also recommend considering explicitly the availability and quality of data
as part of the dissertation topic selection process. We note that some topics appear to be clustered around a few educational institutions, a phenomenon that may require further investigation.
