County Variation in the Rate of Smoking for Teen Mothers

Objective: To compare recent trends in maternal teen smoking with older mothers by race/Hispanic origin and determine if these differences lead to variation in rates of maternal teen smoking for local areas. Methods: Birth certificate data from Washington State for 1992 to 1996 were used to obtain a population large enough to study county-level variation. Results: Important differences exist in patterns of smoking by age comparing white with Black, Native American, Asian/Pacific Islander, and Hispanic mothers. These differences produce notable county-level variations. Conclusion: With the substantial county variation, local programs to alleviate teen smoking need to vary as well.
