Health Beliefs About Mental Illness: An Instrument Development Study

Objective: To evaluate the psychometric properties of an instrument, based on the Health Belief Model, developed to measure health beliefs about mental illness. Methods: Data were collected on a convenience sample of 81 subjects to evaluate internal consistency reliability of the instrument and on an additional 42 subjects for test-retest reliability purposes. Factor analysis was conducted to evaluate construct validity of the instrument. Results: Internal consistency reliability analysis, test-retest correlations, and factor analysis supported the stability of the instrument. Conclusion: The psychometric properties of the instrument should be further evaluated through both quantitative and qualitative means.
