ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response) refers to a physiological reaction to specific audiovisual stimuli that manifests itself as a prickling sensation around the scalp. Particularly, close whispering, crackling noises, or experiencing personal attention can work as a trigger. During the past 6 years, ASMR has developed into a YouTube phenomenon, with numerous so-called Experiencers documenting its positive effects on, e.g., depressive symptoms, sleep disturbances, or anxiety. Regarding this calming effect, ASMR videos are comparable to the practice of meditation. Against this background, the article examines the audiovisual structure of ASMR videos on YouTube, focusing in particular on how their prevalent sound level allows their users to engage in the meditative practice of ASMR.
