The following article deals with the (media-)cultural chance, caused by new technologies and internet applications. Based on the assumption of a shift within the so far ‘conventional’ conception of privacy respectively an incremental displacement of the traditional boundaries between the public and the private – which can be noticed particularly with regard to so called social network sites (SNS) – the development of a new ‘culture of frankness’ is considered with special attention to pictorial representations. In detail the article discusses the new phenomenon of a boundless public access to personal or intimate information using the example of StudiVZ, a network being especially en vogue by German youth and students. Having outlined the theoretical backgrounds at first, the results of a content analysis of more than 400 SNS-profiles including the photos placed there are presented and a classification model is developed. Furthermore the empirical findings und theoretical considerations are put into a historical chronology of ‘published privacy’ in order to distinguish between unexpected continuities and ‘real’ innovations.
