The videoblog (vlog) is one of the most prevalent types of user-created content on YouTube, often taking the form of personal journals or video diaries. Still, vlogs are neither new nor unique to YouTube or ‘Web 2.0’. The generic characteristics of vlogs – such as their ‘talking head’ form, capturing monological self-reflections direct-to-camera or the often poor quality of the video image – have antecedents in the first-person confessionals of personalised documentaries and the overall confessional culture of reality television. This paper examines vlogs as symptoms of cultural transformations as well as remediations of self technologies (like confessional modes) and of media technologies (like the televisual video diary) in order to gain insight into the intrinsic relation of self and media. This relation is understood here as correlative and mutually constitutive. By focusing on prevailing strategies of creating ‘privacy’ or ‘intimacy’ in vlogs on YouTube and on effects of ‘authenticity’ generated by these strategies, the paper explores the relevance of such effects for the constitution of subjectivity and media.
