To gaze beyond the screen: appreciating the communicative function of mise en scène in online psychotherapy
The screen allows psychotherapists to gaze into their patients' mise en scène. It provides those willing to see beyond the digital image, a tapestry through which it becomes possible to discern projection of patients' psychological life and the worlds they create and inhabit. Consideration of the online setting serves to enrich our work with patients and may compensate for the losses inherent in not meeting our patients in person. The fundamental elements of mise en scène, namely the lighting, colour, costume, props, décor, action and performance, space, position of the camera, framing, and the interaction of elements provide a framework on which we can focus analytic scrutiny and elicit valuable material for interpretation.
