Der Diskurs um das Anthropozän wirbelt unsere Vorstellungen von Natur und Gesellschaft durcheinander. Obwohl das neue Erdzeitalter noch nicht offiziell erklärt ist, regt es die Wissenschaft und die Öffentlichkeit zu immer neuen Deutungen an. Tatsächlich verweist das Anthropozän auf eine neue Phase in der Dialektik gesellschaftlicher Naturbeherrschung: ,,Der Mensch“ verändert die Natur immer stärker, ist gleichzeitig aber immer weniger in der Lage, die negativen Folgen dieser Veränderungen Christoph Görg zu kontrollieren. Neu am Diskurs um das Anthropozän ist die Herausforderung, weit auseinanderfallende Zeitskalen zusammenzudenken ‐ vom aktuellen Tagesgeschäft und der nächsten Wahlkampfperiode bis zu erdgeschichtlichen Dimensionen.
