Suggestions for Innovative Action as Exemplified by the Moorland Landscapes in Switzerland Wie lassen sich naturnahe Kulturlandschaften erhalten?

Vorschläge für innovatives Handeln am Beispiel der Moorlandschaften der Schweiz

Moorland landscapes, which are strongly protected in Switzerland, exemplify the possibilities and difficulties in preserving near-natural cultural landscapes. The conservation objective is to preserve these landscapes with their characteristic societal values – biological-ecological, cultural and historical –, including traditional utilization practices. Although the existing measures prevent major undesirable interventions in moorland landscapes, they are insufficient to achieve the stated objective. For instance, typical buildings, wells, hedgerows, and groups of trees are disappearing due to land use changes, natural processes, and minor interventions. Innovations in the institutional framework (e.g., laws, administration) are required. As regulations not pertaining to landscape protection – such as alpine farming, agriculture, and forestry – greatly influence moorland landscapes, an integrative regional landscape management could improve protection.

  • GAIA is a peer-reviewed inter- and transdisciplinary journal for scientists and other interested parties concerned with the causes and analyses of environmental and sustainability problems and their solutions.

Environmental problems cannot be solved by one academic discipline. The complex natures of these problems require cooperation across disciplinary boundaries. Since 1991, GAIA has offered a well-balanced and practice-oriented forum for transdisciplinary research. GAIA offers first-hand information on state of the art environmental research and on current solutions to environmental problems. Well-known editors, advisors, and authors work to ensure the high quality of the contributions found in GAIA and a unique transdisciplinary dialogue – in a comprehensible style.

GAIA is an ISI-journal, listed in the Science Citation Index Expanded, Social Science Citation Index and in Current Contents/Social and Behavioral Sciences.

All contributions undergo a double-blind peer review.
