Initiated by ecocentrism, (eco-)feminism, science and technology studies as well as postmodern philosophy, the development of social theory during the last two decades has been marked by a critical investigation of central elements in modern thought, particularly into the nature/culture dichotomy and other associated distinctions. This paper introduces us to these debates and focuses particularly on arguments that reject essentialist understandings of nature. Following a proposal from Bruno Latour, the paper concludes by discussing a concept of the "articulation of the collective" that goes beyond the modern nature/culture dichotomy.
