The present article foeusses on the following items. (1) Time-related aspeets of energy transformations: It is outlined that eombustion engines and solar photosynthesis funetion in different temporal modes. Omitting this difference may be one of the reasons for the present eeologieal problems. (2) The seientifie eoneept of the strueture of matter as foundation for eontrolled and quantifiable energy transformation: Seientifie methods neglect individual and historically grown aspects of matter and energy. The so-called history of specific system-environment relations, that is to say the "history of matter and goods" isneglected. In turn this negleetion makes modern teehnologies assuccessful asthey are. (3) Procedures for measuring time: Scientific measuring of time uses identical clocks or chronometers all over the world in order to measure any given processes. Scientific time isstandardized time. (4) A sort of eeological questions arise: Are these instruments adequate to describe the diversity of ecological systems, each of them with its own history? - Finally alternative and complementary modes of perception (religion and art) are discussed and the relevance of real histories of goods, for instance potatoes, and products such as cotton T-shirts is demonstrated.

More about this publication?
  • GAIA is a peer-reviewed inter- and transdisciplinary journal for scientists and other interested parties concerned with the causes and analyses of environmental and sustainability problems and their solutions.

Environmental problems cannot be solved by one academic discipline. The complex natures of these problems require cooperation across disciplinary boundaries. Since 1991, GAIA has offered a well-balanced and practice-oriented forum for transdisciplinary research. GAIA offers first-hand information on state of the art environmental research and on current solutions to environmental problems. Well-known editors, advisors, and authors work to ensure the high quality of the contributions found in GAIA and a unique transdisciplinary dialogue – in a comprehensible style.

GAIA is an ISI-journal, listed in the Science Citation Index Expanded, Social Science Citation Index and in Current Contents/Social and Behavioral Sciences.

All contributions undergo a double-blind peer review.
