Outstanding Achievements in Ocean Technology and Science in the 20th Century

This article reviews the development of new technologies that produced incredible scientific discoveries during the 20th century. Implementation of echo sounders and seismic reflection-refraction methods confirmed the theory of plate tectonics (Wegener revolution). The construction and use of deep-towed vehicles and manned submersibles enabled the discovery of hydrothermal vents on the ocean floor. This article is an attempt to show close connections between the innovations in ocean technology and discoveries in the ocean sciences.
