Trump and Latin America: continuity and change
For Latin Americans, making America great again has meant a lethal combination of protectionism, the stoking of prejudices against Latinos in the US, and a ramping up of rhetoric against left governments in the region, especially Cuba and Venezuela. Trump's policy towards Latin America is based on narrow economic nationalism and support for destabilisation, and is backed by military threats. He has also added dangerous element of chaos and disorder into the already lethal US policy towards its Latin American 'backyard'. The US is taking full advantage of the current difficulties of left governments in the region so as to fully reassert its absolute hegemony. In Venezuela the aim is to create a Libya-type scenario, in order to have a framework to intervene militarily. The overturning of the Bolivarian revolution is a key focus of US Latin Anerican policy.
