Trump's rhetoric on restoring manufacturing jobs to the US economy appealed to voters who had seen the Democrats liberal economic approach preside over the collapse of manufacturing. However, there is no sign that he has any alternative, and the loss of skilled jobs has continued under his presidency. An alternative economic strategy, can, however, be forged from city economies, through leveraging the massive purchasing power of large, locally-based, non-profit anchor institutions to create, attract and retain local investment. This is part of the challenge for the left today: to begin advancing a practicable alternative economics that is commensurate with the enormity of the task of community stabilisation and reconstruction.
