A Values Framework for Integrating Social Inclusion into Global Citizenship Education

In recent years, social inclusion has become a central aim of international social policy. Six of the seventeen Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in the 2030 Agenda aim for ‘inclusion’ or ‘inclusive’ progress in development. This paper examines the literature on social inclusion and global citizenship education, and proposes a values framework for social inclusion to integrate into the principles of global citizenship education. Specifically, the paper proposes four key principles that underpin social inclusion and are consistent with the humanistic ideology of global citizenship education.
