Socio-cultural Influences and Current Trends in Teacher Education Programs in Australia
The centrepiece of the educational process is the transmission of sociocultural values inherent in a particular society. For this purpose, the teachers charged with embodying the society’s core-values have to be cognizant of their impact. As educators are entrusted with the noble
task of building a nation’s human resources that may be able to transform its other material resources to goods and services, nation building is closely intertwined with the need to develop effective programs on teacher education. This article reports the results of a research project
which focused on socio-cultural influences and current trends on teacher education programs in Australia based on a study involving 88 teacher educators and 150 senior teachers who supervised teacher trainees in Australia, with 53% of the participants responding.
