SMS Based Learning Delivery, Achievement and Affect: A Viable Alternative to Traditional Vocabulary or Concept Learning at the University Level

SMS based learning delivery platforms have been increasingly used in different countries and university learning situations to deliver vocabulary and concept learning content to university students.

The present study sums up five mini studies in which a total of 1028 first year university students, majoring in social studies at chartered Israeli Universities, studied either vocabulary or concepts delivered via SMS delivery platforms as well as by other learning delivery platforms such as email, hardcopy handout and facebook messages.

Results of all five studies indicate that students who received their vocabulary or concepts via SMS learning delivery held significantly more positive psycho-pedagogical attitudes towards their learning than students who received identical learning content via email, hardcopy or facebook delivery. In view of the abovementioned results, it is suggested that SMS learning delivery be considered as a legitimate alternative delivery platform for the study of vocabulary or concepts at the university level.
