Free Content Physical character-based grading of maize seeds

Agricultural mechanisation requires high seed size uniformity (SU) for seeding, high seedling uniformity (SLU) and high plant uniformity for optimal harvest. Seed uniformity (SU) is an essential characteristic reflecting the homogeneity of the seed lot. Maize seeds are morphologically-diverse among varieties and hybrids, and even within the same cultivar. A physical character-based seed grading strategy was established by combining seed size (reflected by kernel width, KW) and seed shape (represented by ratio of kernel length, KW and kernel thickness) of 206 Chinese hybrid maize cultivars, using an alternation of slot-hole mesh (SHM) and roundhole mesh (RHM) screens. The testing of our established grading system on five cultivars showed that the grading system significantly increased SU and the application on cv. 'JK968' enhanced the mechanical seeding performance.
