Evaluation of Lallemantia royleana seed longevity under varying conditions of temperature and moisture content

Predicting seed viability would be extremely beneficial to seed producers and germplasm banks to promote efficiency and effectiveness. The prediction of seed viability depends on understanding the quantitative relationships between seed longevity, moisture content (SMC) and storage temperature. Thus, the objective of this investigation was to quantify the relationship between temperature, SMC and deterioration, and to determine seed viability constants for Lallemantia royleana seeds. Seeds were stored at 5, 9, 13 and 17% SMC and 15, 25, 35 and 45°C for 0, 30, 60, 90, 120, 150 and 180 days. Survival curves were fitted by probit analysis resulting in estimates for sigma which were then used to determine the viability constants. The viability constants for the species are K E = 4.725, C W= 2.324, C H = 0.02544 and C Q = 0.000 010 68.
